“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29(NLT).
Let me teach you…
Astounding to hear HIM say, “let me teach you.”
The month of July, the month of completion, the month America celebrates freedom, began for me by subtly hearing, “let me teach you.”
Pictured the usual concept of a learning environment: a classroom setting with educator standing at front of class and stationary pupils gaze intently as powerful knowledge is released into receptive minds.
Tractor girl’s preparation for some career development classes has led to great anticipation. Trips to the local dollar store to purchase pens, paper, notebooks, index cards and highlighters have created excitement and enthusiasm. I have endeavored to learn more!
One should love to learn.
Tractor girl is also learning, day by day, precept upon precept, that my concept of learning is quite different from HIS. My ways of how and what I should learn are as far from YHWH’s as the east is to the west. His process of education so unique and foreign to me.
“Let me teach you…”
We reach a place in the journey where HIS direction becomes more important than ever; we literally cannot breathe without HIM. *In HIM I live, move and have my being.* Israel Houghton penned it in a song, I need HIM to breathe into me…for this elevation requires the “Breath of God” to survive. We reach a place, and we hear:
“I have still many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them or to take them upon you or to grasp them now.”
The natural response is why? Why am I not able to “bear” the things that HE wishes to say to me? I feel the need to hear, to gain additional instruction and inspiration.
Why can’t I “bear”the things that HE wishes to say? I want to know. Seeking, knocking, and asking…I desire to know HIM more. Could it be that those divine instructions which we desire are not located in a “normal” learning environment?
Those instructions may not necessarily come on the mountain-top, or when all is going well. HIS voice may not be clearer when the way is brighter and the path is sure. HIS will may not be apparent at a place of human exaltation.
What if HIS direction and instructions are in less desirable places? Could it be that HIS instructions are heard at HIS feet, at a place of lowliness? The class of humility, the one least selected from the curriculum. The road less traveled.
The place of humility…the ultimate place of exaltation.
“Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.”
And here, she hears HIM. Priceless instruction, inspiration and direction are gleaned, at HIS feet.
So, how do we sit at HIS feet? Much of what we say seems so theological. How do we make this a reality? What does sitting at HIS feet look like, for HE is not physically here upon earth?
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
At the start of this learning endeavor, tractor girl was challenged to bring HIM all burdens. The broken heart, the disappointments, the injustices, the mistreatment and the uncertainties. Bring them all to HIM, take HIS yoke…and let HIM teach me.
Teach me that the place of exaltation, the place where HE always wants me, the place where HE is, is the place of humility and meekness. Let HIM teach me that the place of low degree is just where HE wants me. Learn of HIM and from HIM. Learn that HE who silently took upon the injustice of the cross now sits exalted at the right hand of YHWH with all power.
And this place, this undesirable place is where I hear those things that “eye has not seen nor ear heard.” This place is where those secret things of God are revealed. This ultimate place of exaltation, this place of low degree, this place of silently dealing with injustices, failures and heart-break is the place where I hear HIM, see HIM, feel HIM, know HIM.
There’s more of YHWH to learn, there are things HE wants to reveal, secrets and a vastness of HIM to continue to grasp. And all of this is learned, at HIS feet.
Let class begin…
Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.
Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:]
I have still many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them or to take them upon you or to grasp them now.
